How to Pick the Best Watermelons

It’s watermelon season and I’ve got the best tips on how to pick the best watermelons all summer long!

There is an art and science to picking the juiciest and sweetest watermelons. Coming from someone who loves to enjoy watermelons during the hot summer months, I promise that these are tips I use each and every week.

6 tips on picking the best watermelons

Here are my best tips on picking the best watermelons this summer:

  • Look for a small navel
  • Look for symmetry and a cylindrical shape
  • Look for a buttery bottom
  • Look for dark green and yellow stripes
  • Listen for the sound of a basketball
  • Look for a heavy weight

Picking watermelons - Tip #1

Opposite the stem of the watermelon, look out for a small hole, or navel.  The smaller hole signifies a juicier watermelon.

Picking watermelons - Tip #2

The watermelon you select should have symmetry and also hold a nice cylindrical shape.

Picking watermelons - Tip #3

Look out for a buttery yellow spot on the watermelon where the watermelon sat on in the sun.

Picking watermelons - Tip #4

The green and yellow stripes on the watermelon should be vivid with rich color.

Picking watermelons - Tip #5

Knock or thump on the watermelon and you should hear a sound similar to what you would hear if you bounced a basketball.

Picking watermelons - Tip #6

Lift up the watermelon to feel the weight of the fruit. If the fruit feels heavier than it looks, you know you have a good watermelon because it’s full of juicy water.

Storing Watermelons

Here are some additional tips for storing your watermelon.

I like to chop the watermelon ahead of time so that it can chill in the fridge as well as be ready to eat.

Cut long ways across the watermelon and if it split right away you know you have a juicy watermelon.

I cut the half piece into quarters and then carve away the rind.

Cut equal pieces and store in a large container for the fridge. At the bottom of the container you can add a paper towel to absorb the juices that collect at the bottom.

Conclusion

These six tips will definitely help you pick the best watermelons this summer season.  Store in the fridge between 3-5 days. Share with me any tips that you go by. Would love to learn your tips too!
