My Work From Home Desk Organization Setup
It’s a new year so naturally I’m making some changes around here. There is something about a new year that makes me want to shake things up a bit.
I have two different types of work and I’ve been wanting some separation between the two. When you work from home that’s a little difficult to do especially if space is limited.
But despite the challenges I decided to invest in another space with this new desk.
In this post I share my work from home desk organization setup.
New Desk Setup
The desk I purchased is packaged mostly assembled and I only needed to attach the legs. This desk even came with a notched section for a power cord with 2 USB connections with two additional outlets. There are two screws at each end to keep the outlet secure. This feature is a nice addition that you wouldn’t expect for a product at this price point.
All in all this desk was very easy to assemble. Having the option to keep the cord tucked away is the perfect way to achieve a tidy look.
It’s not a huge desk, but it’s definitely going to suit my needs. There is enough space for my laptop, keyboard, mouse and a few other essentials such as a notebook or planner and a water bottle.
I love that it has two additional drawers for storage of my supplies. The drawers are a bit shallow, but that’s not a problem because I’m sharing two different options with product details so you don’t have to run around town looking for a solution.
Shallow Desk Drawer Organization option #1:
I found the perfect bins for these shallow drawers. There are multiple sizes which is great to mix and match in the drawer space. The size is great for markers and pens or long supplies such as scissors. As a bonus feature, the bins nest on top of each other so you can easily stack these as well if needed.
In the drawer I was able to achieve a perfect fit with 4 long bins, plus one shallow bin.
Once the bins are laid out and you’re satisfied with the orientation, start to fill up the space with your supplies. Keep markers together, in color order if that brings joy, keeping all like kind supplies together for ease in accessing when needed.
There is a bit of a gap in the back and easily solvable. In the packing materials that came with the desk there were some cardboard pieces that are a perfect to fill in the gap. It easily prevents the bins from sliding around in the drawer.
Shallow Desk Drawer Organization Option #2:
As a side note, the drawers glide nicely and they are easy to remove and put back into place. When organizing the drawer space, it’s easier to take out the drawer to reach the back.
For an alternate solution for the shallow desk drawer, I’m using frosted nesting bins.
These bins are great because they are shallow and they nest on top of each other for extra storage.
Also shown are these metal bins which are definitely a favorite of mine. They are shallow, super cute, and versatile as well. They look sleek and that are very functional for organization. It’s easy to mix and match and play around with the best layout.
Put the drawer back and start assembling any extra supplies.
Additional Drawer Options:
As a third option you can even use one drawer for your keyboard. My keyboard is extra-long because of the 10 key pad and it still fits in the drawer with ample space left on the sides.
As a fourth option, my MacBook laptop can also be stored in the drawer separately or with the keyboard. I personally love storing a keyboard in the drawer because it allows me to have a clear desk top at the end of the work day.
There is some space on the desk for small decorative touches, and also plenty of space to keep your water bottle handy. For added space I do use a laptop stand. The stand is also great for web meetings because I get the extra height needed for the laptop camera to be at eye level.
To protect the surface of the desk I also like to use a desk mat. The mat is sturdy and thick easily protecting the wood surface and it also doubles as a mousepad.
