Creating Your Personal Power Spot For More Joy At Home
The What, Why, and How of Creating Your Personal Power Spot
There is power in creating your personal power spot for more joy at home that you can call your very own. The spot that recharges you when you’re depleted and comforts you during distress is the space called your personal power spot.
Crafted from your own creativity, the space belongs to you and becomes a sacred place of joy.
In this post I share what is a power spot, the importance of crafting one for yourself and how to create your very own place of joy within your home.
What is a power spot?
“A power spot is your personal space filled with only the things you love,” according to Marie Kondo. This space can be big or small and can actually be your entire home.
That is the goal of tidying up your home; to create a sacred spot that is filled with joy and all the things that you love.
If you’re not yet on your tidying journey or in the midst of it, a personal power spot space can be created by the smallest of spaces.
Consider a corner of your home, a shelf, or even a space in a drawer to be the sacred spot.
Author of The Simple Abundance, a daybook of comfort and joy, Sarah Ban Breathnach also reveals the importance of a personal nook to call your own.
In her book, Breathnach describes a space that delights because it is filled with all your favorite objects that “evoke love and gratitude”.
A place of your very own, the personal power spot containing all the items that you hold dear that bring joy, is the spot where you draw energy for renewal and recharge.
This is your power spot.
The importance of a personal power spot
Allowing yourself to engage in the creation of a personal power spot is multi-layered. The space allows you to reset, renew and recharge yourself.
Centering oneself as a daily ritual can be practiced in the personal spot.
Surrounded by joy, this mindfulness practice has the power to lift our spirits by way of gratitude and love.
As a sacred spot in your home, the power spot is a place for reflection which allows the individual space for growth in their life.
The space may also be the only place an individual might have in their home to call their own.
This too is powerful because ownership of the spot means taking care of it as it contains the most joyful items you own.
Breathnach shares that the scared spot is created to “celebrate, concentrate, and consecrate your inner work.”
Such an important spot in your home supports you in living the life that you want to live.
How to craft your own power spot
Marie Kondo’s power spot is her desk and she brings more joy to her space with fresh flowers and her crystals and tuning fork.
Breathnach also describes her nook in great detail to be a shallow dark blue bench adorned with joyful objects and possessions that bring about a powerful positive energy.
If you have the space, an entire room can exist as your power spot.
To create your own sacred spot, choose an area or spot in your home that you can call your very own.
Here are some suggested areas to create a joyful spot in your home:
- A windowsill
- A bench
- A desk
- Drawer in your dresser
- Hidden space in your closet
- Corner of your room
- An empty shelf in a bookcase
The boundary of your power spot is limited by your own creativity. Then bring in your beloved objects that energize you to the space.
Here are some items to consider bringing into your space:
- Favorite trinkets or mementos
- Any photos of special people or experiences
- Fresh flowers in your favorite vase
- Pens and pencils that you love
Any meaningful and thoughtful item that will add joy to your space is a great idea for your power spot.
Display your items in a joyful manner and mindfully care for the space through cleaning and tidying it up.
When we care for our belongings, our things in turn, care for us by supporting us in our daily lives.
Joy at home starts with the vision you want for your life. Identify what is joyful and surround yourself with those things.
Using joy as your guide, you can craft the sacred spot that becomes where you draw your power.
My room is adorned in a monochromatic color scheme of pink hues from chair covers to pink office supplies.
Since this is my personal power spot I make no apologies for any of the décor choices because they all spark a lot of joy for me.
In this space, I decadently sip on my hot morning coffee while seated on my pink sofa. When it’s time to work I sit in my pink office chair and enjoy the delights of my pink desk supplies.
I am surrounded by joy in my office and while it looks a bit indulgent, it is above all a joyful spot that I love.
Be open to the idea of creating such a space and you may find that your life may be filled with more joy on a day-to-day basis. Invite joy and gratitude into your life.
The effects are truly transformative.
